Court Adjourned without Verdict on Ghassan-Thimarafushi Case

The High Court today convened to its first hearing of the most controversial case of Thimarafushi voting that Human Rights Commission and some others showed concern. The case was filed by Ghassan Maumoon who lost the constituency seat for some other candidate in the preliminary results.

Large number of crowed gathering near the High Court Building with long queues to seek a glimpse of the hearing, the court began its session today morning. The two and half hour long prosecution the lawyer Ghassan Abbas Shareef said that there had been several incidents that occurred during the Thimarafushi voting especially with the Ballot box one. He said the one of the two booths for voter to ink his decision at the center one was completely covered where the voter’s movements cannot be seen suggesting the voter at that booth can forge as many votes as he can.

A video was also shown at the court session that showed a group of people entering the voting station when the ballot box was opened and voting papers were taken for counting. The video then showed the officials putting the ballot papers back into the box. But the video did not show any one touching or taking out any ballot paper.

The Assistant Commissioner of the Elections Commission defending the ballot said that they had investigated the case and collected statements from the officials and security present at the station were analyzed but had not find any breach or irregularity raising question over the transparency and accuracy of the vote.

The court ended today without going further with the case.
