Ministry of Housing Transport and Environment (MHTE) have published the first draft of Maldives National Building Act for public comment. The draft Act is available for download from the ministry’s website.
MHTE has revealed that those who wished to comment on the draft Act may do so before 1430 hours on 31May, either in writing or via email.
In addition, a discussion on the draft Act has been scheduled for 2June 2009 at 1100 hours at the Ministry. Ministry has urged members of the public wishing to participate in the discussion to notify the ministry in advance.
Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam has said that due to lack of adequate and standardized building code, members of the public and construction companies have faced enormous difficulties. President of Male’ Municipality Adam Manik has said that land for housing is scarce in Maldives and that lack of adequate legislation on providing land has aggravated public dissatisfaction.
