Dhiyana Saeed dismissed by the President
President Mohamed Nasheed has today dismissed Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed from the post of Attorney General. The President’s Office cited Article 115(f) and 137(a) of the Constitution for the dismissal. In a letter to Dhiyana Saeed, President Nasheed expressed gratitude for services rendered during her tenure as Attorney General. She was appointed AG on 12th November 2008. Responding to queries regarding this widely expected dismissal, Press Secretary at the President’s Office, Mr. Mohamed Zuhair said that the main reason for this swift action is the recognition by the President that cabinet members serve with the confidence of the parliament and this will pave the way to appoint an Attorney General who would gain greater confidence of the new parliament. The new parliament of the Maldives, elected on 9th May 2009, will be sworn in later this month. It is widely expected that further changes to the cabinet will follow in the same context. Dhiyana Saeed, is a member of the Jumhooree Party, which suffered an embarrassing defeat in the recent election, in which its leader Qasim Ibrahim was the only one securing a parliament seat. One of their members received ‘zero’ votes, which is probably a world record, whilst the poor showing of the other candidates have led to speculation that their leader had made an 11th hour deal with the ousted Dictator and his cronies. Finance Minister, Ali Hashim, has been temporarily assigned to oversee the Attorney General's Office, according to the President's Office.
